The Journey Within Olivia Fraser
Nature Morte is proud to present a solo exhibition of new works by Olivia Fraser in the British Council’s gallery in New Delhi.
Olivia Fraser is a renowned artist, celebrated for her contemporary interpretation of traditional Indian miniature painting. Having apprenticed under master painters in Rajasthan, she uses 17th Century techniques and stone-ground pigments to create meditative, geometric works inspired by Tantric philosophy and sacred geometry, as well as the history of geometric abstraction practiced in Europe and the US in the 20th Century.
To complement Fraser’s artworks, sound artist Jason Singh has composed an immersive soundscape that acts as a bridge between human artistry and the pulse of the earth. A number of the soundscapes were created using a process called biosonification, whereby Singh records the subtle electrical impulses of plants, trees, and fungi, converting their biological data into melodic compositions. This technique honours the legacy of 19th-century Indian scientist Jagadish Chandra Bose, who first discovered the conscious "nervous system" of plants. By blending these botanical rhythms with nature-inspired beatboxing and field recordings from sacred sites in India, Japan, and the UK, Singh invites the visitor to not just view these images, but to move within their resonance.
Born in London in 1965 and raised in the Highlands of Scotland, Fraser has been based in New Delhi since the early 1990s. She is married to the writer/historian William Dalrymple, and they have three grown children. Fraser’s work has been featured in the Venice Biennale and is part of the permanent collections of the Museum of Sacred Art, Belgium, and the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art in New Delhi. She is the author of the critically acclaimed monograph, A Journey Within, published by Harper Collins in 2019. Solo exhibitions of her works have been mounted in New Delhi by Nature Morte, in London by Grosvenor Gallery, and in New York and Singapore by Sundaram Tagore Gallery.
