Subodh Gupta Khagaul, Bihar, India, b.1964

  • Artist’s Instagram +

Subodh Gupta (b. 1964, Khagaul, Bihar, India) works across sculpture, installation, painting, photography, video, and performance. Gupta is widely recognised for transforming everyday objects into powerful symbols of social, economic, and cultural life in contemporary India. Utensils, vessels, and domestic materials appear in his work as emblems of aspiration, migration, labour, and faith, condensing complex realities into forms of striking visual clarity. Deeply attentive to materiality and spatial presence, Gupta’s practice foregrounds the physical encounter between object, body, and environment, positioning sculpture as a central axis of his work. Gupta has participated in numerous major international exhibitions and institutional platforms worldwide. Recent highlights include Adda / Rendez Vous, La Monnaie, Paris (2018); Art Unlimited, Art Basel, Basel (2017); Subodh Gupta: Everyday Divine, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (2016); When Soak Becomes Spill, Victoria & Albert Museum, London (2015); and Everything is Inside, National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi (2014). Earlier notable presentations include Tate Triennial, Tate Britain, London (2009); Palais des Arts de Dinard, France (2009); the 4th Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale, Japan; and PinchukArtCentre, Kyiv (2010).

Gupta currently lives and work in Gurugram, India.
