Ragini Bhow United States of America, b.1991
Ragini Bhow (b. 1991, Minneapolis, Minnesota; raised in Bangalore, India) holds an MFA in Art and Ecology from the University of New Mexico and a BFA in Sculpture from the University of Minnesota.
Her work explores the entanglements of matter, time, and perception through animism, cosmological thinking, and systems of orientation that shape how we understand the world. Working across painting and sculpture, she investigates forms that move between microbial, botanical, elemental, anatomical, and planetary scales, where boundaries between human and non-human, micro and macro, and material and immaterial become porous.
Inspired by Jain cosmology, indigenous knowledge systems, and non-Western traditions of image-making, she approaches abstraction as a means of articulating relationships that extend beyond human perception. Material transformation is central to her practice. Through burning, casting, foraging, sedimentation, and the production of handmade mineral pigments, she works with fire, ash, clay, minerals, and organic matter whose physical properties and histories actively shape each work.
Rather than treating materials as passive mediums, she understands them as repositories of geological, ecological, and cultural memory. Through slow processes of repetition, accumulation, and transformation, my paintings and sculptures invite viewers to encounter matter as an active bearer of memory and looking as a practice of orientation
