Amit Mahadev Dombhare Ganjad, Maharashtra, b.1985
Amit Mahadev Dombhare is a Warli artist from Ganjad, Maharashtra, whose practice is rooted in the visual traditions, ecological knowledge, and cultural histories of the Warli community. Warli painting is a traditional art form originating with the Warli tribe of Maharashtra, traditionally depicting the rhythms of everyday life, rituals, agriculture, animals, and the natural environment through a distinctive vocabulary of geometric forms and rhythmic compositions. Dombhare learned the art form from his grandfather, inheriting not only its techniques but also a way of observing and understanding the world around him. While grounded in this ancestral tradition, his practice has developed into a highly individual artistic language. He is particularly recognised for his exceptionally fine brushwork and the density of his compositions, in which intricate figures, organic forms, patterns, and narratives accumulate across the surface. His works often evoke the interconnectedness of human life and the natural world, drawing on the landscapes, rituals, collective memories, and indigenous knowledge of his community. Through painstaking mark-making and densely layered imagery, Dombhare extends the vocabulary of Warli painting beyond its conventional forms, demonstrating how an inherited visual language can remain dynamic and contemporary while retaining a deep connection to place, material, and cultural memory.
